Mullings powers #1 Seawolves' rout of Falcons

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Megan Mullings had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead a dominating effort for nationally top-ranked Alaska Anchorage, which won its ninth straight with an 82-47 blowout of Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center on Thursday.

The Seawolves (21-1, 8-1 GNAC) also got 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from senior guard Keiahnna Engel as they outshot the visitors 49 percent to 28 percent and forced 26 turnovers.

Guard Courtney Hollander had 12 points and seven rebounds to pace the Falcons (6-10, 3-6), who suffered their sixth straight loss and were handed their largest margin of defeat in 58 all-time meetings against UAA.

After a disjointed opening five minutes, the Seawolves took over with seven straight points to grab an 11-4 lead. UAA led 17-10 after the first quarter and extended to a permanent double-digit advantage when reserve guard Christina Davis's layup made it 23-12 at the 6:37 mark.

The Seawolves took a 43-27 advantage into the locker room and led by at least 15 points throughout the second half.

Junior forward Alysha Devine continued her recent accuracy with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting – along with five rebounds and two steals – while senior guard Jessica Madison and Jenna Buchanan tallied nine points and three assists apiece.

Davis – playing at home for the first time since her MVP performance in the Seawolf Hoops Classic, Dec. 19-20 – scored seven points and dished a game-high five assists, showing no ill-effects from the leg injury that cost her four games recently.

Meanwhile, Mullings shot 7 of 11 from the floor and 6 of 7 at the charity stripe, along with three assists, three steals and two blocks. The GNAC Preseason Player of the Year reached the 20-point mark for the first time since Dec. 31 and scored double figures for the ninth straight time.

Sophomore forward Sierra Afoa added seven rebounds and a career-high four steals for UAA, which returns to the Alaska Airlines Center to face Saint Martin's at 7 p.m. Saturday. Call 907-786-1562 to buy tickets or visit GoSeawolves.com for complete ticket info.

NOTES: Thursday's victory was the 100th career win for UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, who is 86-22 in his three-plus seasons with the Seawolves and was 14-13 in his lone season as interim head coach at his alma mater, Northwest Nazarene … with her final basket, Madison (1,131 pts) moved into 10th place on UAA's career scoring list, passing Diane Dobrich (1,129, 1986-90) … Buchanan extended her school-record streak to 26 games in a row with a three-pointer, nailing her only trey midway through the first quarter … UAA's previous largest margin against the Falcons came in an 85-58 road win last year … the Seawolves have now beaten the Falcons seven straight times to extend their longest streak in a series that dates back to 1977-78.
