#2 UAA dispatches UAF, sets up showdown at MSUB

FAIRBANKS – Jenna Buchanan scored 11 points and fellow senior Megan Mullings grabbed nine rebounds to lead an incredibly balanced effort for 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Tuesday night, helping the Seawolves to an 82-56 women's basketball victory at the Patty Center.

With their 11th straight win, the Seawolves (23-1, 10-1 GNAC) moved into first place by a half-game in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. UAA will face Montana State Billings (13-5, 9-1) – which hosts UAF on Thursday – in a likely showdown of first-place squads at 5 p.m. AST Saturday in Billings.

The Nanooks (9-12, 4-7) got a game-high 20 points from junior forward Jordan Wilson, but the hosts would never recover from an early Seawolf blitz.

After UAF scored the game's first point on a free throw, senior guard Keiahnna Engel sparked UAA to a 20-4 run over the opening seven minutes, collecting eight of her 10 points in the opening quarter. The Seawolves' 29-16 lead marked their most points in the first quarter of a league game, and the advantage expanded to 51-28 by halftime.

UAA led by at least 20 points for all but 30 seconds of the second half, expanding its largest advantage to 82-49 on Tara Thompson's three-point play with 3:15 remaining.

The Seawolves finished with a school-record-low five turnovers as the point guard trio of Kiki Robertson, Christina Davis and Adriana Dent combined for 19 points, 12 assists, eight steals and just two turnovers. Thompson added nine points to establish a new personal best in a GNAC game, and Mullings tallied seven points on 3-of-3 shooting and three blocks, along with her nine boards.

All 12 Seawolves collected at least two field goals, four points and one rebound, including four points and four boards for senior center Dominique Brooks in just eight minutes.

“That was one of our top performances as far as sharing the ball this year, and I can't say enough about the way we took care of it as well – five turnovers is just an incredible number,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. “If we continue to deliver focused efforts like that, I think only more good things are in store for us.”
