#2 UAA sets steals mark in rout of WOU

ANCHORAGE – Seniors Jessica Madison and Megan Mullings combined for 33 points and the nationally 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used an overwhelming defensive effort to earn a 90-39 blowout of Western Oregon on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (17-1, 4-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got  17 assists and 12 steals from the point guard combo of Kiki Robertson and Adriana Dent to cruise to their fifth straight win and extend the program record with a 24th straight victory over WOU.

The Wolves (2-11, 1-4) were led by nine points and six rebounds from guard Sydney Azorr as the visitors from Monmouth were held to 29 percent shooting (12 of 42) and forced into 35 turnovers.

Robertson sparked a 27-7 first-quarter blitz for the hosts, picking up six of her nine steals in the opening 10 minutes. The junior from Honolulu tied the UAA program record for swipes against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent and came just one shy of tying the overall mark.

Junior Alysha Devine added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and four steals, and senior Keiahnna Engel added nine points, five assists and four steals to help the Seawolves crush the GNAC single-game record with 31 steals. UAA also held the previous record of 26, set Jan. 14, 2010 against Montana State Billings.

Meanwhile, Madison paced the offense with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Mullings added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and three blocks in just 17 minutes. Dent dished a career-high nine assists and made three steals as all 11 active Seawolves tallied at least one field goal and one steal.

UAA shot 55 percent (36 of 65) and committed just 11 turnovers – both season-bests – while Robertson dished eight of the team's 29 assists.

The Seawolves return to action Saturday at noon when they host GNAC newcomer Concordia, Ore. (3-10, 1-4) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com for complete ticket information.

NOTES: Senior guard Jenna Buchanan made her lone three-pointer with less than 2 minutes remaining Thursday to claim the UAA program record for most consecutive games with at least one trey; with 22, Buchanan has now surpassed Madison, who hit in 21 straight from Feb. 10, 2014-Jan. 1, 2015 … Madison shot 3 of 7 from long range to push her career total to 179 treys, passing Tanya Nizich (177, 2000-04) for No. 3 on UAA's career list … Robertson's nine steals give her 16 in the last two games and tied four other players for the most by a Seawolf against a Div. II opponent; Stacie Cepin holds the record of 10, set Feb. 15, 1998 against NAIA program The Master's … the 31 steals were the fourth-most ever for a UAA club and just two shy of its D-II record of 33 against Chaminade on Dec. 17, 2010; on the GNAC single-game steals list, only the UAA-Chaminade game and Northwest Nazarene's 34 against Walla Walla (11/27/01) stand ahead of Thursday's total … Mullings raised her career total to 69 blocked shots and is now just one shy of moving into UAA's top five.
