Buchanan, Mullings power #2 UAA past Cavs

ANCHORAGE – Jenna Buchanan scored 19 points and fellow senior Megan Mullings added 16 points and nine rebounds Saturday to propel 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 76-49 women's basketball victory over Concordia (Ore.) at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Buchanan shot 5 of 10 from three-point range as she broke UAA's career three-pointers record – now with 193 – while adding three assists and no turnovers. The Galena native also tied her career high with five steals as the Seawolves (18-1, 5-1 GNAC) earned their sixth straight win.

Concordia (3-11, 1-5) was led by 15 points apiece from guards Briannah Smith and Sierra Dean in the first-ever meeting between the schools. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference newcomers outrebounded the hosts 38-36 but were hurt by 34 turnovers.

Despite a mismatch on paper, the Seawolves struggled at the outset and faced only their second deficit of the season after the first quarter, 18-15. UAA took the lead for good with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, but the Cavaliers stayed close and faced just a 31-29 halftime deficit.

After stretching to a 37-30 edge, Buchanan nailed consecutive three-pointers and hit a 15-foot jumper to push it to 45-35. That set up a big defensive series for the Seawolves, who didn't allow the ball past midcourt on four straight possessions. Senior Keiahnna Engel sparked the clinching run with back-to-back steals and layups, and Mullings made it 53-35 with a layup at the 1:51 mark.

Engel finished with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and four steals, while Mullings shot 5 of 10 from the field, 6 of 7 at the foul stripe and made a career-high five steals. Junior Alysha Devine added 13 points (5-10 FG), six rebounds and tied her career high with four assists, and junior point guard Kiki Robertson dished eight assists without a turnover.

Winners of six in a row, the Seawolves hit the road next week to face Central Washington (Thur., Jan. 14, 6 p.m. AST) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Jan. 16, 5 p.m. AST) in Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests.

NOTES: Buchanan broke the 20-year-old career three-point record formerly held by Seawolf Hall of Famer Allegra Stoetzel, who made 191 treys from 1992-96 … Buchanan also extended another school record with at least one three-pointer in her 23rd straight game … Devine scored double figures for the second time in three days and the fourth time this season, coming one point shy of her career-best against a fellow Div. II foe … the Seawolves committed just 11 turnovers for the second straight game to match their season-low against a Div. II opponent … along with Western Oregon's 35 turnovers on Thursday, UAA has now forced 69 giveaways in the last two games.
