#11 Seawolves rebound with home sweep of Nanooks

ANCHORAGE – Sophomores Leah Swiss and Chrisalyn Johnson combined for 24 kills to lead an impressive offensive attack Tuesday as 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage earned a 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 sweep of Alaska Fairbanks in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Coming off their first loss since late August, the Seawolves (22-2, 12-1 GNAC) got 13 kills on career-best .632 hitting from Swiss to rebound against their in-state rivals. Johnson finished with 11 kills and 14 digs to record her fifth straight double-double, and senior setter Morgan Hooe totaled 35 assists, five kills on .625 hitting, and eight digs.

The Nanooks (2-18, 1-12) were led by seven kills apiece from Maddie Davis and Amberly Jeane as they suffered their 12th consecutive loss, both overall and against the Seawolves.

Despite a mismatch on paper, the Nanooks challenged UAA throughout a first set that featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. But after UAF took a 17-15 lead on a kill by Kim Wong, the Seawolves would rally with six straight points, including two kills by Swiss. Hooe dished assists to Erin Braun (6 kills, 3 blocks assists) and Swiss to make it 24-19, before finishing it off herself on a quick attack off a pass from Taylor Noga.

UAA dominated the second set with a .421 to -.036 hitting advantage, and the Seawolves collected an incredible 22 kills on their 25 points in the final set, hitting .400 in that frame. The Nanooks rallied from a 13-6 hole to tie it 21-21 in the third, but Hooe answered with a perfectly placed sneak attack. Braun put away an overpass on the next point, and Johnson finished it with consecutive kills on feeds from Hooe.

Freshman right-side hitter Diana Fa'amausili added eight kills on .316 hitting and freshman middle block Vanessa Hayes had four kills on .333 hitting for the Seawolves. Sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper – coming off a school-record 43 digs in Saturday's 5-set loss to No. 19 Western Washington – managed 14 digs, three assists and a pair of aces.

The Seawolves conclude their four-match homestand Thursday when they face Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center at 7 p.m.

NOTES: UAA's current winning streak against UAF is the longest in a series that includes 102 meetings and dates to 1980 … Militante-Amper failed to reach 15 digs for just the second time this season; she entered the match No. 7 in the nation with 6.06 digs per set … Swiss committed just one error on 19 attacks to break her previous career-high hitting percentage of .533 (vs. Dixie State, 9/12/15) … Fa'amausili saw her streak of five straight double-digit kills performances come to an end … Tuesday's attendance of 1,222 ranks as the 8th-largest crowd to watch an NCAA Div. II volleyball match this year; five of the top nine attendance figures have come at the Alaska Airlines Center.
