Braun blasts #9 Seawolves to sweep of Wolves

ANCHORAGE – Hot-hitting middle blocker Erin Braun notched 12 kills and fellow senior Morgan Hooe dished 34 assists Thursday to lift 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 volleyball  victory over Western Oregon at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (17-1, 7-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight kills apiece from Diana Fa'amausili and Chrisalyn Johnson as they extended their school-record winning streak to 16 and beat the visitors from Monmouth for the seventh straight time.

The Wolves (5-9, 2-5) were led by nine kills on .350 hitting from right-side hitter Mariella Vandenkooy, while libero Christie Colasurdo made a match-high 19 digs.

After surrendering the first three points of the match, UAA answered with a 9-1 run and controlled the action throughout. The Seawolves served six of their 10 aces in the opening frame and held the Wolves to a -.037 attack percentage in the second to take command.

Leading 11-10 in the third, Johnson smashed a kill and Fa'amausili added two more to spark a 6-0 run. Johnson added another kill to earn match point at 24-18, and WOU committed an attack error to end it.

Braun finished with a UAA season-best .706 attack percentage, committing zero errors on 17 swings. The Southern California native also added three aces and three block assists as she moved into No. 2 on UAA's career block assists list with 353. She is now just six shy of that record, held by Sabrina Bingham (359 BA, 1996-99).

Meanwhile, Hooe added five kills on .500 hitting – despite committing just her third attack error in the last 13 matches – and five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Leah Swiss notched seven kills on .375 hitting, three aces and seven digs, and Johnson had a team-best and career-high-tying nine digs.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matinee against Concordia, Ore. (8-7, 4-3). Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com for ticket information.

NOTES: Thursday's crowd of 1,116 ranks as the fifth-largest in NCAA Div. II play this season and improves UAA's nation-best attendance figure to 996 per match … sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper finished with seven digs as her season-long streak of 17 straight matches with at least 15 digs was snapped … UAA has won 21 of the last 23 sets against WOU … Braun now stands alone at No. 2 on the Seawolves' career victories list with 86, while Hooe is No. 4 with 84, just behind former teammate Katelynn Zanders (85 wins, 2012-15).
