Seawolves, Huskies tie 1-1, UAA wins shootout

ANCHORAGE – Solid goaltending by junior Olivier Mantha and a power-play goal from Jonah Renouf led the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves to a 1-1 tie with the visiting Michigan Tech Huskies in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday at the Sullivan Arena. Additionally, the Seawolves went on to win the shootout for extra points in the league standings.

The Seawolves (1-10-1, 0-5-1 WCHA) ended their losing streak and collected two points after winning the sudden death shootout, 1-0, with freshman Aleksi Ainali scoring the lone goal. Michigan Tech (7-6-3, 6-2-2 WCHA) earned one point with the shootout loss.

Following a scoreless first 20 minutes of play, Tech opened the scoring in the second before UAA responded in the third. Both teams were unsuccessful in the 5-on-5 overtime and the 3-on-3 overtime, forcing the all decisive shootout.

Meanwhile, a night after keeping the Huskies scoreless on the power play, UAA allowed MTU to strike on its second advantage of the evening. Giving the Huskies the 1-0 lead was freshman Gavin Gould at 4:48 of the second, capitalizing on a rebound that came from the blueline with 27 seconds left in the man advantage.

The Seawolves, who only had 17 skaters in the lineup, knotted the game at 2:30 of the third with their first power-play strike of the weekend. Scoring his second of the season was Renouf with a five-hole shot after his twin brother, Nathan, and senior Brad Duwe won the puck against the boards.

Easily the MVP for the Seawolves again was Mantha. A local of La Tuque, Quebec, Mantha made five saves alone in the first overtime and an additional two in the second overtime. Throughout the first four periods, Mantha (1-8-1) turned aside 34 shots, including 16 in the second. Producing 20 saves was Angus Redmond for the Huskies.

UAA and MTU were both 1-for-4 on the power play, both serving eight minutes in the penalty box.

The Seawolves return to the road with a WCHA series at Bowling Green, Nov. 25-26.
