PORTLAND, Ore. – Freshman
Diana Fa'amausili smashed 16 kills and senior
Morgan Hooe dished 45 assists Friday to lift No. 11 Alaska Anchorage to a hard-fought 26-24, 29-27, 23-25, 25-17 volleyball victory over Concordia at LCEF Court.
The Seawolves (24-2, 14-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got double-doubles from outside hitter
Chrisalyn Johnson and
Leah Swiss as they extended their lead to two matches over idle Western Washington with five matches remaining in the regular season. Johnson had 16 kills and 16 digs, while Swiss collected 11 kills and 10 digs for the top-ranked team in the NCAA Div. II West Region.
The Cavaliers (12-11, 8-7) were led by 18 kills and 15 digs from outside hitter Brenna Huwe and 43 assists from setter Michele Brown in the loss.
After an easy sweep of the Cavaliers in Anchorage on Oct. 8, UAA got a much stronger test from the start this time. Trailing 23-20 in the opening frame, UAA rallied with the next three points but still faced set point after Hooe's serve went into the net. Fa'amausili responded with a kill to tie it 24-24, and – following a double-hit by the Cavaliers – the right-side hitter from Federal Way, Wash., blasted another kill to complete the comeback.
UAA appeared to be in complete control of the second set, holding late leads of 22-16 and 23-18 before the Cavaliers made a comeback of their own. CU's Lindsey Dorsey ripped one of her 12 kills for a 23-23 tie, before Fa'amausili answered for the Seawolves. Despite sending it far into extra points, the Cavaliers could not grab the lead, though, and Johnson smashed back-to-back kills to claim the frame and a 2-0 lead.
Johnson brought UAA back within 24-23 with a kill late in the third, before another kill by Dorsey gave the Cavaliers their first set victory over the Seawolves in the first four meetings between the programs.
UAA asserted itself in the fourth, jumping to a 7-1 lead and extending to 17-9 on an ace by
Taylor Noga. Leading 23-17, Swiss notched a kill and
Kyla Militante-Amper served an ace for the cinching points.
Swiss's double-double was her team-high 10th this season, while Johnson pulled off her seventh consecutive double-double. Senior middle blocker
Erin Braun added nine kills on match-best .471 hitting, and Hooe accounted for six kills on .333 hitting herself.
Militante-Amper, playing just a few miles away from her hometown of Hillsboro, Ore., finished with a match-high 20 digs and dished four assists.
Fa'amausili hit for a .367 attack percentage and added four block assists, coming one shy of her career-high 17 kills, which came in a 5-setter last month against Western Washington.
The Seawolves return to action Saturday with a 6 p.m. ADT first serve against Western Oregon (9-13, 6-9) in Monmouth, Ore.
