#12 UAA cruises to 99-36 victory in opener

ANCHORAGE – Senior guard Suki Wiggs scored 26 points and senior forward Corey Hammell added 15 points and eight rebounds Friday as Alaska Anchorage premiered with a 99-36 men's basketball victory over Portland Bible in the season-opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves – ranked No. 12 in the preseason NCAA Div. II top 25 poll – also got 14 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Augustus Simmers in his UAA debut, while starting wing Spencer Svejcar finished with 12 points and four assists.

The Wildcats (0-2) were led by 13 points and three steals from starting forward Trey Merriweather, but the visitors were outshot 51 percent to 24 percent and outrebounded 53-25.

Wiggs – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year and a returning Third Team All-American – shot 11 of 14 from the field (4-6 3FGs), along with five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in 27 minutes.

Friday's result was never in doubt as the Seawolves' 57-18 halftime lead tied the sixth-largest in program history. The 63-point final margin tied the 10th-largest for a UAA team, while the 36 points allowed ranks fourth on the program's single-game list.

Other standout individual performers for UAA included sophomore point guard Damien Fulp (7 assists, 0 turnovers, 2 steals), sophomore forward Sjur Berg (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 0 turnovers, 3 steals) and junior guard Ashton Pomrehn (9 points, 3-3 3FG).
