Hooe, local heroes propel road sweep of Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Senior setter Morgan Hooe orchestrated another balanced offensive attack and came up with several big plays in the third set to lead the 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 victory over Western Oregon on Saturday night at the New P.E. Building.

Hooe finished with 36 assists, five kills and seven digs, and the Seawolves (25-2, 15-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got a team-high 11 kills from freshman right-side hitter Diana Fa'amausili to maintain a 2-match lead over second-place Western Washington, which also won on Saturday.

UAA also benefitted from great efforts by the two Oregonians on its roster, getting seven kills on seven attacks and three total blocks from freshman middle blocker Vanessa Hayes (Salem/McNary HS), plus 18 digs from sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper (Hillsboro/Century HS).

The Wolves (9-14, 6-10 GNAC) were paced by a match-high 16 kills from outside hitter Alisha Bettinson, but the hosts were outhit .264 to .190 as UAA earned its eighth straight win in the head-to-head series.

The Seawolves took the early advantage when Fa'amausili and sophomore outside hitter Leah Swiss (9 kills, 9 digs) ripped back-to-back kills to repel a late WOU charge in the first set.

Trailing 17-16 in the second, UAA used a familiar late surge to take 20-17 lead, getting consecutive blocks from Hayes in the run. WOU earned the next two rallies before Fa'amausili bookended a 5-0, set-clinching run with kills.

Despite being down 18-13 and 22-20 in the third, UAA recovered for the sweep behind several clutch plays by Hooe. The All-GNAC performer teamed with Erin Braun for a block to make it 22-22, then snuck a dump attack into the back corner for a 23-22 edge. After WOU repelled one match point, Hooe spiked home a 50/50 ball to regain the lead, and the match ended on a Wolves attack error.

Sophomore outside hitter Chrisalyn Johnson tallied nine kills, 11 digs and two aces – barely missing her eighth straight double-double – and sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Noga notched five digs, two assists and an ace, providing a big lift with her serve in the opening set.

Ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, the Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for their final regular-season home matches, Nov. 10 against Northwest Nazarene and Nov. 12 against Central Washington. Both contests start at 8 p.m.
