Wildcats split with Seawolves

ANCHORAGE – Northern Michigan picked up a Western Collegiate Hockey Association split with host Alaska Anchorage, as the Wildcats defeated the Seawolves, 4-1 Saturday at the Sullivan Arena.

Following a 2-0 Wildcat lead after two periods, the Seawolves (2-12-2, 1-7-2 WCHA) cut the lead in half with a shorthanded strike by junior Tad Kozun, but a power-play goal and an empty netter sealed the win for NMU (4-12-2, 2-9-1 WCHA).

Scoring his team-high-tying fourth of the season was Kozun, capitalizing on junior captain Matt Anholt's pass off the rush in front of netminder Atte Tolvanen at 5:00 of the third. With the assist, Anholt leads UAA with five helpers and nine points. The second assist was credited to Eric Roberts – his first point of the season.

The Wildcats picked up strikes in the first and second. Scoring at 5:10 of the opening period was Troy Loggins, while Brock Maschmeyer scored on the power-play at 2:39 of the second. NMU furnished both goals in just six shots on net.

Meanwhile, making it a 3-1 game was Robbie Payne on the man advantage at 15:43 of the third, while Dominik Shine picked up the empty-net strike with 58 seconds left in the game.

UAA out shot NMU with a season-high 30 shots on net to 17. Goaltender Olivier Mantha made 13 saves in the loss, while Tolvanen made 29 for the win. Additionally, the Wildcats kept UAA scoreless on seven power plays.

With the loss, the Seawolves fall back into 10th in the WCHA standings with six points, while the Wildcats jump ahead to ninth with seven points.

The Seawolves hit the road next weekend for a WCHA series against in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks, Dec. 9-10 at the Carlson Center.
