New assists leader helps #1 UAA crush Crusaders

ANCHORAGE – Junior point guard Kiki Robertson dished eight of her 10 assists in a dominant first-half performance for top-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, helping the Seawolves cruise to an 82-53 victory over Northwest Nazarene.

UAA (27-1, 14-1 GNAC) extended its winning streak to 15 games and avenged its only regular-season loss in two seasons at the new Alaska Airlines Center, getting 14 points apiece from seniors Jenna Buchanan and Megan Mullings.

The Crusaders (8-13, 6-9) got 14 points from guard Ellie Logan and seven points, five assists and six steals from senior point guard Taylor Simmons.

UAA led 11-10 midway late in the first quarter when Mullings and Buchanan combined for nine straight points to start the game-deciding run. Alysha Devine swished a three-pointer to make it 23-10 after 10 minutes, and the onslaught continued in the second quarter with a 29-10 scoring differential.

UAA's 52-20 halftime lead was just one point shy of its largest ever in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game, while the Seawolves' 31 team assists also tied for their second-highest total in a GNAC contest.

The only drama left in the fourth quarter surrounded Robertson's quest for the UAA career assists crown, which she claimed with a dish to Sierra Afoa at the 7:55 mark. Robertson now has 462 assists in Green & Gold, surpassing Seawolf Hall of Famer Allegra Stoetzel, who had 460 dimes from 1992-96.

Meanwhile, Engel was all over the court with eight points, a career-high nine assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals in just 16 minutes, while junior Alysha Devine and senior Jessica Madison chipped in 13 points apiece. Mullings (6 of 7), Devine (6 of 8) and Buchanan (5 of 9) were all hot from the field as the Seawolves outshot the visitors from Idaho 51 percent (34 of 67) to 27 percent (17 of 64).

Mullings added two blocks and a game-high eight rebounds, while freshman forward Hannah Wandersee had six points, six rebounds and a block off the bench.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the host Central Washington in another GNAC contest.
