Top-ranked Seawolves fend off Saints in Lacey

LACEY, Wash. – Senior forward Megan Mullings had 19 points and nine rebounds Thursday to help nationally top-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 71-59 victory over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (29-1, 16-1 GNAC) also got 14 points from junior forward Alysha Devine as they matched the second-longest streak in program history with their 17th straight victory.

The Saints (5-19, 3-14) were led by 11 points and 13 rebounds from senior forward Megan Wiedeman, but the hosts could never quite recover from an early Seawolf run and suffered their 12th consecutive loss.

UAA asserted itself from the opening tip, scoring game's first eight points and forcing five turnovers before the Saints could get on the board. The Seawolves led 26-15 after the first quarter and threatened to pull away late in the half, stretching their largest advantage to 39-23.

However the Saints answered with a 10-2 run to end the half and continued their surge after the break, pulling within 46-41 on Elin Johnansson's layup at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter. UAA regained its momentum 40 seconds later when point guard Kiki Robertson found freshman Tara Thompson for a transition three-pointer, and another Robertson feed to Mullings made it 52-41.

With SMU still in striking distance and just 8:15 remaining, senior Jenna Buchanan drained her third three-pointer of the night to make it a 62-49 edge. A layup by Robertson stretched the lead to 68-53 with 6:03 left as the junior from Honolulu added three points to her game-high seven assists.

Reserve guard Adriana Dent dished five assists and grabbed three of UAA's 16 steals, with her and Robertson combining for just one turnover. Thompson matched her best scoring total in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game with nine points (3-5 FG, 2-4 3FG), while Buchanan tallied 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3FG) and had two steals.

Mullings shot 8 of 14 from the field and tied her career-high with five steals, while Devine continued her hot shooting, connecting on 5 of 9 overall and 3 of 4 three-pointers. Senior guard Jessica Madison scored all nine of her points in the first half, and sophomore forward Sierra Afoa chipped in four points and three rebounds.

With three games left in the regular season, the Seawolves have already matched their win total from last season and are just two shy of the program record of 31 from 2008-09.

UAA travels an hour north on Saturday for a 5 p.m. AST showdown against longtime rival Seattle Pacific. That game can be seen live at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.

NOTES: The 17-game win streak matches last year's team that went 17-0 to end the regular season and sweep the GNAC Tournament … the Seawolves have beaten SMU four straight times and swept the season series in four of the last five seasons … Buchanan extended her school record to 34 straight games with at least one three-pointer … Madison became the eighth Seawolf to top 1,200 career points, now with 1,208.
