Mullings, Seawolves shut down Cavs, 59-32

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior Megan Mullings collected 19 points and 12 rebounds and the 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used a stifling defensive performance to earn a 59-32 win over Concordia at Cavalier Court on Thursday.

The Seawolves (25-1, 12-1 GNAC) also got nine points from senior guard Jenna Buchanan as they stretched their winning streak to 13 games, allowing the program's second-fewest points in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.

The Cavaliers were led by nine points from guard Lexi Campbell, while Keesha Sarman had four assists and eight rebounds, but the GNAC newcomers were held to 19 percent shooting (9 of 48), including 1 of 20 inside the arc.

UAA trailed 9-5 at the first media timeout before quickly taking control with a 14-0 run. Mullings had her way in the paint, shooting 7 of 13 and grabbing nine offensive rebounds in just 20 minutes. Buchanan shot 3 of 5 from long range to score all of her points in the first 20 minutes, staking the Seawolves to a 31-19 halftime lead.

The Cavaliers could never get any offense going in the second half either, going scoreless for over nine minutes and trailing 46-23 after three quarters.

Senior guard Christina Davis added six points and three assists, senior guard Adriana Dent had six points and two assists, and senior center Dominique Brooks had 6 points on 3-of-5 shooting for the Seawolves, who complete a four-game road swing Saturday at Western Oregon. That game can be seen live at 6 p.m. AST at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.

NOTES: The 32 points tied the 16th-fewest allowed in program history and were the sixth-fewest allowed against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent … UAA's previous best for scoring defense in a GNAC game was 78-29 win at Alaska Fairbanks on Dec. 3, 2011, although that victory was later vacated … junior Kiki Robertson made three steals to move into third place on UAA's career list, now with 253 … Buchanan extended her school-record streak to 30 straight games with at least one three-pointer … Brooks's six points were one shy of her season-high and marked her best effort in a GNAC game.
