McGill's career-high helps Seawolves clip Clan

BURNABY, British Columbia – Senior guard Brian McGill scored a career-high 34 points and junior guard Suki Wiggs added 24 points and three assists Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team pull away for an 86-66 win over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (18-7, 11-3 GNAC) also got eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds from senior forward Christian Leckband as they remained unbeaten in 15 all-time meetings against the NCAA's lone Canadian member.

The Clan (1-19, 0-14) were led by 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from center Gibran Sewani, while guard Oshea Gairey had 12 points and six assists.

Deadlocked early at 6-6, McGill penetrated for consecutive layups – including a three-point play – to spark a 12-2 run that would give UAA to lead for good. The Seawolves stretched to a 35-24 lead with 3 minutes left in the half before the Clan rallied with six straight before the horn.

Wiggs – who had two fouls and just four points at halftime – got untracked early in the second half, sandwiching four free throws around another McGill layup to make it 41-30.

The Clan stayed within striking distance at 61-51 with 9 minutes left, but Wiggs and Corey Hammell combined for three free throws and McGill swished a jumper to give the Seawolves a comfortable cushion again.

Hammell had 10 points and five rebounds, and Leckband scored eight points to go with his big night on the glass. Redshirt freshman Damien Fulp also give UAA a lift off the bench with three assists and no turnovers.

Meanwhile, McGill was nearly flawless, shooting 11 of 15 from the field and 11 of 11 at the foul stripe, plus a career-high-tying four steals. The Oregon native now has 65 points in the last two games, making all 26 of his free throws.

Combined with Seattle Pacific's overtime loss to Western Oregon on Saturday, UAA's victory gives the Seawolves a one-game lead over SPU for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

The Seawolves play their third game in six days when they visit Montana State Billings in another GNAC contest on Tuesday at 5 p.m. AST.
