Hot-shooting 'Jackets defeat Seawolves, 90-71

BILLINGS, Mont. – Junior guard Suki Wiggs scored a game-high 27 points but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to overcome a hot-shooting Montana State Billings club in a 90-71 loss at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Seawolves (18-8, 11-4 GNAC) also got 14 points and five assists from senior guard Brian McGill as they lost for just the second time in eight Great Northwest Athletic Conference road games this season.

The Yellowjackets (9-14, 5-10) got 25 points and 13 rebounds from freshman forward Preston Beverly, who keyed the hosts with 5-of-8 three-point shooting. MSUB shot 54 percent overall and 63 percent (17 of 27) on three-pointers, earning a split of the regular-season series and snapping a three-game losing skid against UAA.

MSUB took a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes and slowly extended it throughout the first half. The Yellowjackets led 57-32 by the break, despite 16 points from Wiggs, who topped his GNAC-best scoring average of 23.8 ppg. He shot 8 of 18 from the floor, including 4 of 6 on three-pointers, and 7 of 9 at the foul stripe, along with a team-high seven rebounds.

McGill – the reigning GNAC Player of the Week – was saddled with two fouls early in the first half and scored 10 points after the break, hitting all four of his free throws. Junior forward Corey Hammell added 13 points and six rebounds, senior forward Christian Leckband had seven points and five rebounds, and junior guard Drew Peterson chipped in five points for UAA.

The Seawolves return home Thursday night to play their fourth game in eight days, facing rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
