Silverswords upset #14 Seawolves in Honolulu

HONOLULU – Freshman Diana Fa'amausili had 10 kills to propel a comeback attempt but it wasn't enough Friday as the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team was upset by Chaminade, 25-19, 29-27, 27-25 at McCabe Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (1-1) also got 10 kills from sophomore outside hitter Chrisalyn Johnson and 19 digs from sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper as they suffered their first regular-season, non-conference loss since 2014.

The Silverswords (1-0), coming off a 19-9 record in 2015, got eight kills from three different players, while Daisia LaBrie added five total blocks to help the hosts out-hit UAA .188 to .081.

After trailing throughout the first set, the Seawolves – the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions – scratched back to take a 17-15 lead late in the second. Chaminade answered with four straight points, however, and took a 24-20 edge on Cassie Rushlow's solo block.

The Seawolves then delivered four consecutive points of their own, capped by a Fa'amausili kill, to make it 24-all. UAA earned consecutive set points on kills by Johnson and senior Erin Braun, but the Pacific West Conference club took the final three rallies to clinch a 2-0 lead, capped by a kill from Kiana Drumheller.

The third set was another classic, and with the same outcome. After facing a 19-16 deficit, Braun and sophomore Leah Swiss ripped two straight kills to earn a tie. The set would be tied at 20, 21, 22, 23 and finally at 24 on Fa'amausili's ninth kill of the night. The rookie middle blocker from Federal Way, Wash., struck again to even things at 25-25, but LaBrie slammed another kill and the Silverswords stuffed Braun at the net to end it.

The loss snapped a seven-match road winning streak for UAA, dating back to last October.

Senior setter Morgan Hooe finished with 26 assists and seven digs, while Braun had five kills and a team-high four total blocks.

The Seawolves end their Hawaii road trip with a showdown against another Pac West club, Hawaii Pacific, on Saturday at 8 p.m. ADT.
