#14 Seawolves sweep aside Sharks

HONOLULU – Sophomore Leah Swiss and freshman Diana Fa'amausili notched 10 kills each Saturday to lead the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-13 sweep of Hawaii Pacific at the St. Andrew's Priory gymnasium.

The Seawolves (2-1) also got a great all-around effort from senior setter Morgan Hooe, who finished with 26 assists, three aces, six digs, two block assists and four kills without an attack error. Sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper led the defensive effort with 15 digs for the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions.

The Sharks (0-1) were led seven kills and five digs from outside hitter Pomai Recca, but the Pacific West Conference club was outblocked 11-4 and out-hit .231 to -.009.

“We did a much better job of playing our game and not letting our opponent dictate the action,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “Tonight was a good bounce-back effort after a tough loss, so that was encouraging, but we have to get refocused and keep improving.”

Despite the final score, the first set was a tough affair, with UAA needing to overcome a late 19-17 deficit. An HPU service error opened the floodgates on a 7-0 Seawolf run at that point, however, and the visitors never looked back after Swiss slammed a kill on set point.

UAA jumped to a 7-1 lead in the second and an 11-5 edge in the third as it led the rest of the way, clinching the match on an ace by Swiss, an outside hitter from Anchorage's Dimond High School.

Hooe (.364), Swiss (.321) and senior middle blocker Erin Braun (5 kills, .333) all hit better than .300, while Fa'amausili connected at a .286 clip and added five block assists. Another freshman contributed as middle blocker Vanessa Hayes had four kills, four digs and a team-high digs block assists.

Sophomore Taylor Noga had 14 digs and was a perfect 13 of 13 on service receptions, while sophomore Chrisalyn Johnson added six kills.

The Seawolves return home this week when they host four matches in the 20th annual SpringHill Suites Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center, Sept. 1-3. UAA opens against Westminster on Thursday at 7 p.m. before playing two matches on Friday – vs. Rollins at 2 p.m. and vs. Stanislaus State at 7:30 p.m. Action concludes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with UAA against No. 19 Arkansas Fort Smith.
