Veterans propel #12 UAA to sweep of Falcons

ANCHORAGE – Erin Braun delivered a season-high 13 kills and fellow senior Morgan Hooe dished 32 assists Saturday to power 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 25-18, 25-20, 27-25 volleyball sweep of Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (12-1, 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 kills and 14 digs from sophomore Leah Swiss to secure their 11th straight win overall and seventh in a row against their longtime rivals.

The Falcons (4-6, 0-2) – whose previous two losses each came in five sets – were led by 10 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Gabby Oddo and 10 kills from Lexi Biondi.

UAA controlled the first two sets with identical attack percentages of .341 (17 kills-3 errors-41 attacks), never trailing in either frame. SPU provided some drama in the second with a 3-0 run to draw within 20-19 on a kill by Hannah Lautenbach, but the Seawolves answered with four straight points, including two kills by Braun and one from Swiss. After an Oddo kill, Swiss would come through with the clincher.

The third set was a classic, featuring 12 ties, eight lead changes and an impressive comeback by the hosts. Trailing 19-14, the Seawolves rallied with five consecutive points and took the lead, 21-20, on one of Chrisalyn Johnson's eight kills. SPU then took advantage of three straight UAA errors to claim a 23-21 edge and prompt a timeout from UAA head coach Chris Green.

Following an SPU service error, Swiss notched another kill, and Keala Kaio-Perez served UAA's only ace of the night for 24-23 lead. Oddo kept SPU alive with her final kill, and Lautenbach delivered another to make it 25-25. Oddo's ensuing serve would go long, however, and UAA ended the match in unconventional fashion, getting a feed from Swiss – an outside hitter – to Kaio-Perez, a defensive specialist whose back-row attack landed cleanly in the middle of the SPU defense. It marked the first career kill for the junior transfer from Western Nebraska Community College.

“I was fairly pleased with our play in the first two sets,” said Green, who improved to 171-70 in his eight and a half seasons at the Seawolf helm. “Seattle Pacific is a very well coached and experienced team, though, and we were fortunate to escape in that third set. Erin and Morgan really provided the veteran leadership at the right times, and that made the difference tonight.”

Braun, a 6-foot middle blocker, committed just one attack error for a .429 hitting percentage, while adding a team-high three block assists. Meanwhile, Hooe was nearly flawless, with seven kills on .700 hitting, 13 digs and two block assists. The 2015 AVCA Third Team All-American committed only one error on the night – one of UAA's nine service errors.

Despite a .098 attack percentage, Swiss notched her fourth double-double of the season and added a career-high four assists. Freshman right-side hitter Diana Fa'amausili had eight kills on .353 hitting, and libero Kyla Militante-Amper came up with 24 digs and six assists.

The Seawolves' 11-match win streak equals the fourth-longest in program history and is just three shy of the record, set by last year's GNAC-title club.

UAA hits the road for its next four matches, beginning with major showdowns against GNAC preseason favorite and 19th-ranked Western Washington (5-5, 1-1) on Sept. 22 and Simon Fraser (9-1, 2-0) on Sept. 24. After one full week of league play, UAA and Simon Fraser at the only unscathed teams in the GNAC standings.
