Sophomores power spikers to home-opening sweep

| Box Score 2 ANCHORAGE – Sophomores Kyla Militante-Amper, Chrisalyn Johnson and Leah Swiss came through with impressive performances Thursday to lift the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-12, 25-19 sweep of Westminster in the opening match of the SpringHill Suites Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (3-1) got 10 kills apiece from Johnson and Swiss, while Militante-Amper added 18 digs, three assists and pair of her team's 17 aces – the most for a UAA squad in 10 years. Swiss also notched a career-high-tying six aces and made eight digs, while Johnson connected for a career-best .474 attack percentage in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

The Griffins (0-1), from Salt Lake City and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, were led by seven digs and four digs from outside hitter Amanda Spere, plus 16 digs from libero Megan Gallegos.

UAA started with a sizzling .432 attack percentage in the first set and never looked back, taking control early in every frame. Freshman right-side hitter Diana Fa'amausili added seven kills and senior setter Morgan Hooe had five kills on just seven attacks to help the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champs hit a season-high .326 (40 kills-10 errors-92 attacks).

Hooe – a returning AVCA Third Team All-American – also finished with 26 assists, two aces and nine digs, and fellow senior Erin Braun chipped in four kills.

The Seawolves return to action with a pair of matches Friday in the SpringHill Suites Invitational, taking on Rollins at 2 p.m. and West Region foe Stanislaus State in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are good for the entire day and can be purchased online at AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com or in person at the AAC's Terry Ann Homan Box Office.

NOTES: UAA's 17 aces were a record under 9th-year head coach Chris Green and the most for any UAA team since serving 18 in a 3-1 loss against St. Mary's, Aug. 25, 2006 … Hooe moved into fourth place on UAA's career assists list with 2,637, passing fellow local product Kasey Kuelper (2,625 assists, 2000-03) … Swiss's six aces tied her career high, set last year against Montana State Billings … Johnson also had a career-best 5.00 kills per set, playing only the first two frames Thursday.
