Roadrunners use defense to knock off Seawolves

ANCHORAGE – Senior center Moataz Aly scored 16 points, point guard Brent Wrapp dished 11 assists and CSU Bakersfield used a record-tying defensive effort to earn a 59-39 win over host Alaska Anchorage in the first round of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout on Wednesday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Roadrunners (3-2) also got 14 points, five rebounds and two steals from guard Rickey Holden as the defending Western Athletic Conference regular-season champions earned a spot in Friday's 8 p.m. AST tournament semifinals against Idaho.

The Div. II Seawolves (3-3) were led by nine points and eight rebounds from senior swingman D.J. Ursery, while junior forward Josiah Wood accounted for 9 points and five rebounds.

CSU Bakersfield shot 43 percent to UAA's 29 percent, equaling the Shootout record for fewest points allowed in a game. St. John's established the mark in 2010 with an 82-39 victory over Drake.

The Seawolves play next against Santa Clara in Thursday's 8 p.m. consolation semifinal round.
