FAIRBANKS – Freshman Eve Stephens had eight kills but little went right for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Tuesday as the Seawolves fell upset victim to Alaska Fairbanks, 25-22, 25-11, 25-22, at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (15-4, 8-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were led by 13 digs from senior libero Taylor Noga as they fell into third place by half a match in the GNAC standings and saw their four-match winning streak snapped.

Now winners of five straight, the Nanooks (8-10, 6-5) got a match-high 15 kills from Markie Miller on .464 hitting as they out-hit the visitors .302 to .198 and claimed their first victory in the series since 2010 in Anchorage. UAF also snapped a nine-match skid against UAA in Fairbanks, winning here for the first time since 2008.

“We got off to another slow start and it really came back to cost us tonight,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “It's very hard right now to find anything positive about our performance, but we'll try to use it as a learning experience and get refocused on the type of volleyball we should be playing.”

After rallying from a two-set deficit in Saturday's win at Seattle Pacific, the Seawolves came into Tuesday's contest with an unlikely 5-3 record this year when losing the first set. That trend would not continue, however, as four service errors wound up being costly in the opening frame.

UAF controlled the entire second set and played with a comfortable lead for most of the third until Chrisalyn Johnson drew the Seawolves within 23-22 with an ace. Johnson's next serve didn't get over the net, though, and Miller completed the upset with a kill.

Riding their longest winning streak in over a decade, the Nanooks moved into sole possession of fourth place in the GNAC standings with the victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Vera Pluharova continued her recent hot hitting for UAA, collecting six kills on just eight swings, while senior Tara Melton and Johnson each had six kills.
