Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Junior newcomer Safiyyah Yasin scored 16 points to lead No. 6 Alaska Anchorage to a 92-52 women's basketball victory over Holy Names on Saturday in its 2018-19 season opener at The Swamp in the Gator Invitational.
The Seawolves also got 14 points and nine rebounds from Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Hannah Wandersee, plus 12 points apiece from sophomore forward Sala Langi and junior point guard Yazmeen Goo.
The Hawks were led by 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from Maria Valenzuela, but the Pacific West Conference club was unable to capitalize on an brief lead at the outset.
“That was a great team effort,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, who has five Bay Area natives on his roster. “It was nice to feel like the home team with all of our support that came to the game. Our bench was key to pulling away in this one.”
Yasin, from across the bridge in Oakland, shot 6 of 9 overall and 3 of 6 on three-pointers to help UAA shoot 63.3 percent in the first half. The former Diablo Valley College star added three assists, three steals and three rebounds without a turnover in a just 19 minutes off the bench.
Goo, from nearby Daly City, shot 5 of 7 and added three assists and a pair of UAA's 16 steals, while Langi (Pacifica, Calif.) shot 4 of 7 (2-3 3FG). Vallejo product Kian McNair had eight points, four assists and two steals.
The Seawolves return to The Swamp on Sunday at 2 p.m. to face host San Francisco State.
