Box Score HONOLULU – Junior forward Tyler Brimhall had 23 points and 11 rebounds but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team was not able to come up with the big plays in the final minutes of a 71-62 loss to Chaminade at McCabe Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Seawolves (3-1) also got 13 points and four assists from junior guard Jack Macdonald but were unable to capitalize on a three-point lead in the final four minutes.
The Silverswords (2-0) were led by 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from forward Erik Sheive as the Pacific West Conference club outshot UAA .489 to .393 and finished the game on a 13-1 run.
“It was a hard-fought, tough game,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “We dug out of an early hole and gave ourselves a chance, but missed free throws by excellent shooters kept us from extending the lead.”
UAA fell behind 9-0 at the outset before coming back to tie it 29-29 at halftime.
Freshman guard Tobin Karlberg gave the Seawolves their first lead at 41-40 with a layup at the 13:57 mark of the second half, and the game would stay within one or two possessions for the next 10 minutes.
Macdonald made it a 61-58 UAA lead on a feed from Brimhall with 3:52 left, but the visitors would not score another field goal.
Grant Dressler scored inside for Chaminade to break the tie with 2:37 remaining, and the Silverswords followed with a layup by Telly Davenport to spark the game-ending run.
“In the last three minutes we did not respond on either end,” Osborne said. “Poor defensive containment and rebounding hurt on one end, and poor decisions hurt offensively. But we are a new group and getting better each week. Hopefully we can have some good support next weekend from our community because I believe they will enjoy watching these young men compete.”
Junior forward Niko Bevens had nine points and sophomore point guard Brennan Rymer finished with nine points and a career-high six rebounds in the loss.
The Seawolves return to Anchorage next week to face Northwood on Friday and Lake Superior State on Saturday in the Seawolf Jamboree. Both games start at 5 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1295 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
