Balanced Seawolves pin Gators, 86-54, in San Francisco

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO – Senior guards Tara Thompson and Sydni Stallworth led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points apiece Sunday as 6th-ranked Alaska Anchorage rolled to an 86-54 women's basketball victory over San Francisco State at The Swamp in the Gator Invitational.

The Seawolves (2-0) also got 13 points, three assists and four steals from Yazmeen Goo, plus 10 points and a career-high five assists from fellow Bay Area native Sala Langi as they outshot the hosts 45 percent to 32 percent overall, including 11 of 26 three-pointers.

The Gators (0-2) were led by 10 points from starting guard Isabella Lemonea, but the California Collegiate Athletic Association squad could not keep pace, committing 24 turnovers.

“We played well after the first quarter, but we cannot afford a slow start against our opponents next week, and certainly not when the league season gets under way,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. “I'm pleased that we are sharing the scoring load, however, and our new players are fitting into the system better every day. We are excited to get home and play in front of our home fans next week.”

After leading just 15-12 after one quarter and 37-28 in the waning seconds of the first half, UAA took over with a huge run over the next seven-plus minutes. Thompson drained a three-pointer right before the half and the Seawolves scored the first 16 points after the break, making 7 of 15 treys in the third quarter.

Thompson added two assists to go with her 4-of-5 three-point shooting, while Stallworth shot 5 of 9 from the field with two assists, two steals and no turnovers.

Goo, from nearby Daly City, made both of her field goals and 8 of 9 free throws, and Langi, from Pacifica, made 5 of 6 charities and had two steals and no turnovers.

No Seawolf logged more than 24 minutes, with 10 of the 11 players scoring at least three points. Sophomore forward Tennae Voliva had seven rebounds and match her career high.

The Seawolves make their season home debut Friday and Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center when they host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Seawolf Hoops Classic. Games tip both nights at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com.
