Northwood holds off Seawolf comeback, 83-77

Box Score

ANCHORAGE – Tyler Brimhall had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead a big second-half comeback Friday but it was not enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team in an 83-77 loss to Northwood at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (3-2) also got 13 points from freshman guard Travis Adams and 11 points from junior forward Niko Bevens in their first home loss this season.

The Timberwolves (1-2) – from Midland, Mich., and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – were led by 14 points, seven rebounds and nine assists from starting guard Ja'Kavien Lewis as they put six players in double-figure scoring.

After trailing by as many as 17 in the first half, the Seawolves whittled the halftime deficit to 46-33 and began to chip away in the second half.

Two free throws by sophomore guard Brennan Rymer trimmed Northwood's lead to 67-58 at the 10:26 mark, and Rymer made it 67-64 with two more charities.

Brimhall assisted on a layup by freshman Tobin Karlberg to slice it to 71-68, and Adams scored on a driving layup and was fouled, completed the three-point play for a 71-71 tie with 3:59 remaining.

The Timberwolves would answer, however, getting a four-point play when Jack Ammerman's three-pointer swished through simultaneously with a foul being called under the basket on UAA's Brian Pearson. David Jelinek added one free throw for a 75-71 lead, and Tanner Reha followed with a back-breaking three-pointer with 2:08 left.

A putback by Pearson made it 80-77 with 17 seconds left, but Reha made one of two free throws on the ensuing possession and the Seawolves would not score again.

A transfer from North Idaho College, Brimhall scored double figures for the fifth time in as many games as a Seawolf, shooting 9 of 16 overall and 3 of 6 from long range. He also added three assists to go with his second consecutive double-double.

Adams shot 4 of 5 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the foul stripe in just 15 minutes, and Bevens was 3 of 6 from three-point range. Rymer and junior forward Sjur Berg added eight points apiece off the bench for UAA.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday to face another GLIAC team, Lake Superior State (1-0), which began its season with an 85-63 win over Alaska Fairbanks earlier Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center. Tip-off between the Seawolves and Lakers is set for 5 p.m. Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or Alaska AirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
