Veterans propel #6 Seawolves past Pioneers, 66-50

Box Score

ANCHORAGE – Junior point guard Yazmeen Goo had 14 points and six steals and nationally 6th-ranked Alaska Anchorage used a huge first-half run to earn a 66-50 women's basketball victory over Cal State East Bay on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (3-0) also got 14 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting from senior guard Tara Thompson as they remained unbeaten in seven all-time meetings against the visitors from Hayward, Calif.

The Pioneers (1-2) were led by 13 points and seven rebounds from forward Morgan Greene but were forced into 31 turnovers by UAA's full-court press.

“That was certainly not a pretty win, but we'll take it,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team committed 20 turnovers of its own and was outshot .400 to .392. “We allowed them too many good looks at the basket and we never seemed to get into an offensive rhythm. Luckily our veterans stepped up and did what it took to get the victory.”

East Bay led 6-3 early and knotted it 11-11 on a three-pointer by Madison Schiller at the 5:23 mark of the first quarter, prompting a timeout by McCarthy. The Seawolves responded with a 17-0 run over the next eight minutes, building a 28-11 lead before the Pioneers scored again with 7:07 left in the second quarter.

UAA took a 50-32 lead after three quarters and earned its largest edge when Kian McNair opened the final period with a short jumper on a feed from Goo. The Pioneers got within 12 points on three occasions in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.

Goo shot 5 of 7 from the field and 4 of 5 at the free-throw line as the Bay Area native came one point and one steal shy of matching her career highs.

Senior center Hannah Wandersee added 11 points, sophomore forward Sala Langi had a team-high seven rebounds, and McNair stuffed the stat sheet with eight points (3-6 FG), five assists, six steals and three rebounds, while committing just one turnover.

The Seawolves also got a career-high three assists from reserve center Tennae Voliva.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face another California Collegiate Athletic Association foe in Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-1). For tickets, call 907-786-1562 or surf to GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com.
