UAA mourns loss of Ron Abegglen

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Former University of Alaska Anchorage head men's basketball coach Rob Abegglen recently passed away in his homestate of Utah.

Abegglen served as the head coach of the Seawolves for five seasons (1986-91), leading the Seawolves to three conference championships and four NCAA Tournament Appearances. The 1987-88 team posted the best finish in school history playing for the NCAA Championships before falling to UMass-Lowell 75-72. His winning percentage of .708 (109-45) over five seasons is the best winning percentage in school history.

Abegglen served two years as an assistant coach under Harry Larrabee before taking over as head coach. The Seawolves won one conference title and finished second in the region during his time as an assistant coach.

During his five seasons as UAA head coach, he coached five All-Americans, four conference players of the year and was named the conference coach of the year in 1987-88.

Abegglen started his coaching career Utah serving as a high school at Morgan High where he posted a 232-88 record (.725) over 13 seasons. He then moved on to Snow College where he posted a record of 212-75 (.739) over eight seasons.

After his time in Anchorage, Abegglen moved on to Weber State where he posted a record of 152-83 over eight seasons, third most WSU history. He led the Wildcats to three Big Sky titles and a pair of NCAA Tournament upsets in 1995 over Michigan State and 1999 over North Carolina.

He spent two seasons after WSU coaching the London Tower of the British Basketball League before retiring from coaching.

He was a member of the basketball team at BYU where he earned his degree in physical education in 1962.

He is survived by his children Kirk, Kris, Kent and Sara.
