Clan comeback ends Seawolves' win streak in 5

ANCHORAGE – Junior Kayla McGlathery notched a career-high 17 kills but the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team could not capitalize on late leads in the third and fourth sets Thursday as visiting Simon Fraser earned a 23-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11 upset at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (12-5, 7-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 kills and a career-high 14 digs from sophomore Eve Stephens, plus a career-high 28 digs from sophomore libero Talia Leauanae in the loss.

The Clan (10-7, 6-3) was led by 17 kills from Camryn Vosloh and an impressive 38 digs from libero Bianca Te as they snapped UAA's five-match winning streak and earned their first win in 10 regular-season trips to Anchorage.

"We didn't do the things offensively that we'd practiced all week, and Simon Fraser's defense was outstanding," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "Defensively we did a lot of things very well, but we didn't show the focus that we needed at key times in the match, especially the fifth set."

The Seawolves had to repel a late Simon Fraser surge to capture the opener, with Vanessa Hayes slamming a kill after the Clan had fought off two set points.

UAA cruised to an early win in the second set thanks to a .233 to .069 hitting advantage, and the Seawolves led 23-21 before things went south. Following a Simon Fraser timeout, the Canadians got back-to-back kills from Kirsten Pinckney, forcing Green to use a timeout of his own. Vanessa Hayes was called for an attack error on the next rally, and the Clan sent it to a fourth set with another kill by Pinckney.

A back-and-forth set four tilted towards the Seawolves when Stephens collected a kill to make it 23-22, however the Clan would make another comeback. Vosloh answered with a kill, followed by an unassisted kill by Tamara Clarke. Hayes then hit the ball wide to force a fifth set.

Simon Fraser never trailed in the final frame, jumping to a 5-2 lead and fending off each Seawolf comeback. McGlathery drew the Seawolves within 11-9 with her final kill before the Clan answered with three straight points. A kill by Hannah Pembroke and a Vosloh attack error kept the Seawolves alive before Stephens hit wide on the third match point.

Stephens' double-double was her fifth this year and her first in GNAC play, while Pembroke tied her career high with 11 kills. UAA's hefty 16-6 advantage in blocking was offset the Simon Fraser's 113-89 edge in digs, and the Seawolves lost the match despite outhitting the visitors .196 to .178.

Leauanae's 28 digs were also a UAA season high and 12 more than the Hawaiian had ever produced.

McGlathery hit .417 and tied career highs with eight block assists and seven digs, while fellow middle blocker Vera Pluharova had seven total blocks.

Sophomore setter Ellen Floyd finished with 48 assists, 10 digs and five block assists as she surpassed 1,500 career assists.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. for a showdown with nationally 2nd-ranked and two-time defending GNAC champion Western Washington (17-0, 9-0). Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
