ANCHORAGE –
Kayla McGlathery and
Eve Stephens each blasted 11 kills and
Ellen Floyd dished 33 assists to propel the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its third straight victory Saturday, 25-7, 25-20, 25-18, over Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-4, 5-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 digs and a pair of aces from sophomore libero
Talia Leauanae as they outhit NNU .305 to .065 and remained in a second-place tie in the GNAC standings.
The Nighthawks (6-7, 2-4) were led by eight kills from Natalie Sulllivan as the visitors could never overcome a slow start, falling for the fourth straight time in the head-to-head series.
"We couldn't ask for a much better opening set than we had tonight," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "Our serving was effective and we got another solid effort from our back row. Any time you're able to hit over .300, it means you're doing the right things fundamentally."
Coming off a season-high 12 kills in Thursday's sweep of Central Washington, McGlathery collected four of her kills in the opening set and finished with a match-best .529 attack percentage, along with four block assists. The Seawolves served eight of their 10 aces and hit for a .500 percentage in the first frame as they recorded their most lopsided set victory of the season.
UAA took a 3-2 lead in the second set on a block by Stephens and McGlathery, and slowly extended their advantage. A kill by
Hannah Pembroke started a 4-0 run that made it 18-12, capped by a pair of
Vanessa Hayes kills. The Nighthawks made a late 4-0 run of their own but finally committed a service error to end the set.
The Seawolves broke a 3-3 tie in the third set with seven straight points behind the serve of
Anjoilyn Vreeland, although the Nighthawks would rally to within 14-13 on a block by Brooke Foster and Lexi Ward. UAA took the next four points, however, including a pair of kills from McGlathery, and did not let NNU to get closer than 20-17. The Seawolves earned the final three rallies, capping it with a monster block from Pembroke and
Vera Pluharova, followed by a Stephens kill.
Pembroke notched eight kills on .286 hitting and two block assists, fellow freshman
Maggie Schlueter had three aces, and Vreeland made nine digs from her defensive specialist position.
UAA returns to the road next week for GNAC matches at Concordia-Portland (Thur., Oct. 10, 6 pm ADT) and Western Oregon (Sat., Oct. 12, 6 pm ADT), with both contests available live at gnac.tv.
