ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Senior forward
Niko Bevens scored 17 points to lead a balanced scoring effort Saturday for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team in an 81-69 road victory over Sonoma State at The Wolves' Den.
UAA (5-1) also got 10 points and seven rebounds from junior center
Oggie Pantovic, as nine of the 10 active Seawolves scored at least five points.
Sonoma State (1-3) was led by 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from forward Isaac Davidson, but the rest of his starting teammates combined to shoot 10 of 32 from the floor.
"This was a great team win," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose Seawolves have equaled their best six-game start since 2013-14. "We had guys step up again in crunch time. Everybody contributed in some way, whether it was scoring, defense, or facilitating the offense. We can now get a good 10 days of practice in and correct some weaknesses."
UAA never trailed in the game between the only two NCAA Div. II programs with the nickname Seawolves. Bevens nailed two of his four first-half three-pointers to spot the visitors an 8-0 lead, which grew to 18-3 on a trey by junior guard
Amari Hale.
On pace to hit the century mark midway through the first half, UAA cooled off and took a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
DeAndre Osuigwe and
Tyler Brimhall scored for UAA out of the halftime gate to reestablish a double-figure lead, and Brimhall nailed a three-pointer to stretch it to 57-43 with 11:47 remaining.
The hosts made two more surges – pulling within 62-56 at the 7:20 mark and 69-65 with 4:17 left – but UAA responded with runs each time.
Tyrus Hosley scored five straight points to fend off the first Sonoma charge, and
Jack Macdonald scored a traditional three-point play to start a clinching 7-0 UAA run, which was capped by back-to-back layups from Pantovic.
Sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg scored nine points , while Hosley finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and no turnovers.
Bevens shot 5 of 9 from three-point range, Hale had 9 points on 3-of-3 long-range shooting, and Osuigwe tallied eight points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and no turnovers. Starting center
David Riley added seven points (2-2 FG, 3-4 FT) and five rebounds, and Macdonald – who posted a team-high 20 points in Friday's 81-69 win over San Francisco State – scored just five points but tied his career high with six assists.
UAA gets 12 days off before returning to the Alaska Airlines Center to face Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan on Nov. 29-30. Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
