Seawolves clip Clan, 3-1, to earn 20th victory

BURNABY, British Columbia – Eve Stephens returned from a two-match absence with 22 kills and fellow sophomore Ellen Floyd delivered 48 assists, 15 digs, five kills and five blocks Saturday to help Alaska Anchorage earn a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16 volleyball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

Senior outside hitter Vanessa Hayes added 13 kills and nine digs for the regionally 5th-ranked Seawolves (20-6, 15-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), who avenged their lone conference home loss this season and clinched no worse than second place outright in the final standings.

The Clan (16-10, 12-6) were led by 14 kills from Betsie de Beer, but the West Region's 8th-ranked team was outhit .222 to .120 and outblocked 15-9 in suffering its second straight loss.

"Our team has responded impressively to a lot of adversity the last couple weeks, and this match was a microcosm of that," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "When we were down late in the first two sets, we showed nice poise and were able to reverse the momentum. It's terrific to have Eve come back with such a dominant offensive performance as well. This should give us a lot of confidence going into our last home matches next week."

Two nights after upsetting No. 4 Western Washington in five sets for their third straight win, the Seawolves were in trouble early, trailing Simon Fraser 20-16 in the opening set Saturday. Consecutive kills by Jalisa Ingram and Stephens turned the tide, however, and Hayes collected a kill and a solo block during a 9-0 run to take the early lead.

Simon Fraser erased a 18-17 deficit in the second and went ahead 23-21 on an ace by Tamara Clarke, prompting Green to call timeout. His team responded again, with Stephens ripping two kills to tie it, and Ingram collecting another kill to earn set point. SFU's Camryn Vosloh then committed an attack error to put UAA up two sets to none.

Despite dropping a competitive third set, the Seawolves came back to lead from start to finish in the fourth. Floyd smashed a kill for a 10-5 lead, and the advantage expanded to 17-10 on back-to-back blocks by Stephens and Ingram. A junior who has been inserted into the regular lineup in the last four matches, Ingram posted a solo block on match point to record her career-high sixth total block.

After missing the last two matches with an injury, Stephens came one kill shy of tying her career high, while hitting .408 and collecting five total blocks and 12 digs.

Ingram finished with seven kills and no attack errors for career-best .583 percentage, and freshman outside hitter Hannah Pembroke tallied six kills a career-high nine digs.

Junior Anjoilyn Vreeland led the Seawolves with 16 digs, while back-row partner Talia Leauanae had 12 digs and two aces.

The Seawolves remain one match behind Western Washington (24-2, 16-2) with two matches remaining in the regular season. UAA finishes at home against Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific next week, while WWU will play road matches arch-rival Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.
