Karlberg's career high paces Seawolves in opener, 80-34

Box Score ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard Tobin Karlberg scored a career-high 18 points and junior point guard DeAndre Osuigwe dished eight assists to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team begin its regular season with an 80-34 blowout of Portland Bible at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves also got 17 points from senior forward Tyler Brimhall and 12 points and four assists from senior guard Jack Macdonald as they outshot the visitors .484 to .298 and forced 26 turnovers.

The Wildcats – for whom the game counted as an exhibition – were led by 10 points and seven rebounds from starting forward Moses McEwan.

"I thought that was a nice effort to build on," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, who begins his 16th season at the helm. "I was pleased with the way we shared the ball and played unselfishly, which will be a key to how successful our team can be this year."

Tied 2-2 after two minutes, the Seawolves used two straight baskets from Brimhall to spark a 26-2 run over the next 10 minutes. UAA outscored the visitors 17-0 on points off turnovers in the first half to build a 41-15 edge at the break, and continued to extend the lead the rest of the way.

A local product from Grace Christian High School, Karlberg shot 7 of 11 from the field and dished three assists, topping his freshman high of 14 points.

Osuigwe, a transfer from State College of Florida, premiered with eight points and five rebounds, along with his 8-to-1 assist-turnover ratio. Another newcomer, junior center Oggie Pantovic, finished with six points, six rebounds and five assists, while junior guard Amari Hale debuted with eight points, three assists, no turnovers and two steals.

The Seawolves are home again Friday at 8 p.m. when they face Coast Guard in the Armed Forces Classic. That game will be nationally televised on ESPNU, following a Div. I contest between Washington and nationally ranked Baylor that begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
