Eve Stephens delivered 15 kills and senior
Vanessa Hayes added 10 kills in her final home match Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-14 sweep of Seattle Pacific in both teams' regular-season finale at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The regionally 5th-ranked Seawolves (22-6, 17-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 29 assists, 11 digs and three aces from sophomore setter
Ellen Floyd as they finished one match behind Western Washington (26-2, 18-2) in the final standings. WWU clinched its third straight GNAC title earlier Saturday with a 3-1 win at Northwest Nazarene.
The Falcons (13-15, 10-10) were led by seven kills and three block assists from Delaney Dunham as they were outhit .297 to .110.
"Our serving finally came around in the second and third sets and started to cause SPU some trouble," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "And then our offense just caught fire at the end. This was a great win to keep our momentum going forward into the playoffs. We're excited to find out our opponent on Monday."
The Seawolves needed a comeback to win the opening set, trailing 17-15 after a kill by SPU's Erin Gould. UAA took the next four points, and snapped a 20-20 tie on a kill by Hayes. Hayes served a knuckleball ace to make it 24-21, and Stephens delivered on set point two rallies later with her seventh kill of the frame.
UAA committed six of its nine service errors in the second set but overcame that by holding SPU to a -.077 attack percentage. Hayes collected four kills in the set, and junior defensive specialist
Anjoilyn Vreeland served a pair of aces to help the Seawolves maintain a comfortable lead throughout.
After allowing an ace to open set three, the Seawolves roared back with a 12-2 run, getting three straight aces from Floyd to take control. UAA hit a whopping .727 (16 kills-0 errors-22 attacks) in the final set, capping the victory with kills to earn their last five points.
Stephens hit a match-high .424, along with eight digs and three block assists, while Hayes connected at a .375 clip.
Vera Pluharova finished with five kills on .333 hitting and four total blocks, and fellow junior middle blocker
Kayla McGlathery registered a match-high five total blocks.
Sophomore libero
Talia Leauanae led UAA with 13 digs and dished four assists as UAA swept SPU for the second time this year and avenged last year's home upset loss to the Falcons.
Virtually assured of the program's ninth NCAA Tournament berth in 11 seasons, the Seawolves will learn their first-round opponent for the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships when the national playoff field is announced Monday at 3:30 p.m. AST on NCAA.com.
