DURHAM, N.C. – Senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin scored 14 points and sophomore guard
Nicole Pinckney added 11 points to lead the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team in a 91-59 exhibition loss to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Challenging the Div. I Blue Devils for the third year in a row, the Seawolves also got seven points and three rebounds from junior newcomer
Kedranea' Addison in the loss.
Duke was led by 19 points, 15 rebounds and four assists from senior All-ACC guard Haley Gorecki, along with 19 points from forward Leaonna Odom, as the hosts outshot UAA .507 to .274 and outrebounded the smaller Seawolves 62-30.
The Seawolves played without Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason all-league point guard
Yazmeen Goo – who stayed in Anchorage to heal a preseason injury – and managed to commit a respectable 13 turnovers, while forcing 20 by the Blue Devils.
"I thought for the fact that we played without our fifth-year senior leader and primary ball handler, we did well overall," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy. "We showed the hustle that's indicative of our program, no matter the score, and we controlled the aspects that we could control – minimizing our turnovers and forcing them into some. But against a team of that size and quickness, it was difficult to get open looks and certainly on the boards."
Junior forward
Tennae Voliva led the Seawolves with seven rebounds, and freshman guard
Rachel Ingram added six points on a pair of three-pointers.
Yasin – another preseason all-GNAC pick – scored all 14 of her points in the first half, shooting 6 of 11 from the field (2-3 3fgs), along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Pinckney, returning from an injury redshirt campaign, shot 3 of 5 from long range.
The Seawolves return home for their season debut at the Alaska Airlines Center next weekend when they host Chaminade on Saturday and San Francisco State on Sunday. Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
