ANCHORAGE – Senior
Vanessa Hayes delivered a career-high 19 kills and junior
Kayla McGlathery posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 total blocks Saturday to boost the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 25-8 victory over Concordia-Portland at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (18-6, 13-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 40 assists, 15 digs, four kills, three aces and four total blocks from sophomore setter
Ellen Floyd as they survived despite playing without GNAC kills leader
Eve Stephens, who missed the first match of her career due to injury.
The Cavaliers (8-15, 6-10) were led by nine kills and 15 digs from outside hitter Jessica Wheeler, but the visitors were outhit .302 to .044 and outblocked 15-5 as they remained winless in 10 all-time matches against the Seawolves.
"Any time you can win without your potential All-American, you'll take it," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team sits No. 4 in the NCAA Div. II West Region rankings. "Our ladies did an excellent job of making the adjustments without Eve in the lineup, and Vanessa came through for the second match in a row with a gigantic performance. She really showed a lot of senior leadership this week."
After winning Thursday's match against Western Oregon despite missing McGlathery in the lineup, the Seawolves seemed to not miss a beat, outhitting Concordia .556 to -.074 in a dominating first-set win.
The Cavaliers rebounded in the second frame, however, and fended off a late Seawolf comeback to earn their first set win in 17 tries all-time at the Alaska Airlines Center, clinching it on a kill by Wheeler.
UAA never trailed in the final two sets, jumping to leads of 19-9 in the third and 18-3 in the fourth. Hayes tied her previous career high of 18 kills – set in last month's 3-1 win over then-No. Western Washington – to make it a 23-8 score in the fourth, before claiming her 19th kill on match point. The Oregon native hit over .400 for the second match in a row, connecting at a .459 clip, along with a pair of block assists.
Freshman outside hitter
Hannah Pembroke had seven kills and junior right-side hitter
Jalisa Ingram had five kills on .500 hitting and a career-high five total blocks, filling in for Stephens along the front row.
Sophomore libero
Talia Leauanae finished with 10 digs, while junior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova notched six block assists.
The Seawolves play their final regular-season road matches next week at fellow playoff contenders Western Washington – ranked No. 4 nationally – and Simon Fraser. Those contests begin Thursday and Saturday at 6 p.m. AST, respectively, and can be seen live online at gnac.tv.
