Boll Weevils hand Seawolves 83-74 setback in Oahu

HONOLULU – Guards Tobin Karlberg and DeAndre Osuigwe delivered career-high scoring efforts but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not complete a second big comeback Thursday, falling 83-74 to Arkansas Monticello in the D2 Power Invitational at the Hawaii Convention Center.

The Seawolves (8-3) got 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Karlberg, a sophomore from Anchorage's Grace Christian School, while Osuigwe had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists as the State College of Florida transfer shot 6 of 12 from the field.

The Boll Weevils (9-2) were led by 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from starting guard KJ Lesure, while Denzel Duffy added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Great American Conference squad.

"We lost to a good team today," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team erased a 46-29 deficit to take the lead briefly in the second half. "I was proud of our resiliency to fight back, but we ended up shorthanded as David (Riley) is fighting an ankle injury and Jack (Macdonald) a virus which kept him out of the second half. We will regroup and come back tomorrow."

UAA led 15-14 when Tyrus Hosley swished a floater in the lane, however Arkansas Monticello would get red hot from long range, sinking 10 of its first 17 three-point shots to grab its largest lead with 3:50 on the clock. The Seawolves answered with 10 straight points to finish the period, and continued their surge in the second half, getting a three-pointer from Niko Bevens and another layup from Hosley to earn a 55-54 lead.

The Seawolf advantage was short-lived as the Boll Weevils answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. UAA cut it to a five-point game three times in the final 2:44, including 79-74 on a rebound putback by Oggie Pantovic, but Amari Hale's three-pointer missed with 33 seconds left, and the Boll Weevils clinched it at the free throw line.

UAA returns to the same court Friday to face No. 21 Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6:45 p.m. AST.
