Hajdukovich helps #10 UAA escape Hilo upset bid

HILO, Hawaii – Sophomore guard Jahnna Hajdukovich scored 19 points and senior guard Safiyyah Yasin had 15 points and a career-high eight rebounds Sunday to help 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage come back for a 59-47 women's basketball victory over Hawaii Hilo at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Seawolves (12-1) won their non-conference finale despite shooting 27.6 percent (16 of 58) from the field and 18.2 percent (4 of 22) on three-pointers, taking advantage of a 40-28 rebounding advantage and 23 free throws.

The Vulcans (1-7) were led by 12 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Allie Navarette, who surpassed 1,000 career points in the third quarter.

"I want to commend Hilo on a strong effort today, but I should also say we're very lucky to come away with a victory after how poorly we played for most of that game," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team has won eight straight since suffering its lone loss Nov. 27 at Lynn. "We made poor decisions, unforced turnovers and rushed shots. We're fortunate Jahnna was on offensively, or else this could have been a different outcome. Kedranea' Addison made some big plays late, too. The holiday break is coming at a good time for us to get refocused."

Having won six of the first eight meetings in the all-time series by more than 35 points, the Seawolves led just 13-12 after the first quarter. Hilo grabbed the lead midway through the second quarter and took a 28-25 edge into the locker room, marking UAA's first halftime deficit of the season.

The Seawolves' offensive drought continued for the first five minutes of the third quarter as Hilo built a 37-27 lead when Navarette scored in the lane at the 6:51 mark. Yasin scored two free throws and junior forward Sala Langi made a strong rebound putback and drew the foul, completing a three-point play to spark a 10-0 run, and Hajdukovich nailed a three-pointer to tie it 40-40 in the waning seconds of the third.

Mandi Kawaha opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer for Hilo, but the Seawolves took over from there, taking the lead when Addison stole the ball from Kawaha and streaked in for another traditional three-point play to make it 45-43.

Hajdukovich – whose previous season high was 10 points – capped a 10-0 run with a technical free throw to earn a 50-43 lead at the 3:39 mark, and Hilo went without a field goal for the final 9:24 as the Seawolves took control.

Addison scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter and did not commit a turnover in 16 total minutes, while senior point guard Yazmeen Goo finished with seven points (5-6 FT) and four steals. Yasin added three steals and was 9 of 10 from the charity stripe for the most free throws made by a Seawolf this year.

While her teammates combined to shoot just 10 of 47 from the field, Hajdukovich shot 7 of 12 overall and 4 of 8 from long range, along with three rebounds and a pair of UAA's 13 steals. The former Dimond High star came just three points shy of her career high, set last season at Alaska Fairbanks.

UAA returns to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play after the new year when the Seawolves face Seattle Pacific on Jan. 2 in Seattle.
