The UAA family was saddened this week by the passing of Patrick Flanigin, who served the past five seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the Seawolves' women's basketball program.
A former star at the University of Wyoming, Flanigin moved to Alaska in the late '70s to play professionally for the Anchorage Northern Knights. In addition to basketball, he was active in the community, including as president of the YMCA and coaching golf in the First Tee program.
"Pat had a significant impact on our program, both on and off the court," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy. "He was an excellent example of how to treat others, learn from mistakes, lead with compassion, and serve with purpose. He touched so many lives in our program and I know that while he isn't with us anymore, many of his qualities will live on in our program. He was a great mentor for me as a coach and as a person, and I am forever grateful for our relationship throughout my lifetime. He will be missed dearly."
