Stallworth, Seawolves surge past Cavs, 71-47

Box Score

ANCHORAGE – Senior guard Sydni Stallworth scored 21 points and grabbed four steals Thursday to propel the 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to its 15th straight victory, 71-47 over Concordia Portland at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (22-1, 14-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points and five assists from senior center Hannah Wandersee as they remained unbeaten in eight all-time meetings against Concordia and kept pace with 7th-ranked Northwest Nazarene atop the GNAC standings.

The Cavaliers (11-12, 6-9) – who had won four their last six games – were led by 15 points from guard Olivia Vezaldenos, but the visitors were hurt by 26 turnovers and a 41-32 disadvantage on the boards.

“We came out really slow offensively, but our defense was solid all night and gave us the lift we needed,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team outscored the Cavs 33-10 in points off turnovers. “On a night when we struggled shooting in the first half, Syd was exception, luckily. She has been really locked in the past few games, and that continued tonight.”

After playing the Seawolves tough in a 75-68 loss in Portland last month, the Cavaliers came out strong Thursday and took a 9-5 lead in the opening seven minutes.

Stallworth drove for a layup and drained a three-pointer to give UAA the lead, though, and the Seawolves capped a 21-2 run when she hit another to make it 26-11 with 6:56 left before the half.

Wandersee scored four points during a 7-0 surge to start the third quarter as UAA led by at least 15 for the final 17 minutes. The Kodiak native and All-GNAC performer shot 6 of 8 from the field and added a pair of UAA's 18 steals, while matching her career high in assists.

Stallworth shot 7 of 16 overall and 4 of 7 from long range, along with three assists and three rebounds, and junior guard Safiyyah Yasin added nine points and two assists off the bench.

Senior guard Kian McNair continued her amazing defensive play with seven steals, boosting her GNAC-best average to 3.6 steals per game. The Vallejo, Calif., native extended her streak of multiple-steal performances to 15 in a row and moved into a tie for ninth place on the Seawolves' career list, now with 168 in just 53 games. McNair finished with six points, five rebounds and two assists, while committing just one turnover.

Freshman forward Kimani Fernandez-Roy had four rebounds, two blocks and a career-high three assists.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. to face Western Oregon (7-14, 4-11). Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
