INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off an outright regular-season title and riding a 20-game winning streak, the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team moved up to No. 2 in Wednesday's third and final public version of the official NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, which go toward determining NCAA Tournament qualification.
The nationally 5th-ranked Seawolves (27-1) switched positions with fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference club and nationally 9th-ranked Northwest Nazarene (25-2 vs. D-II opponents), while fellow GNAC club Simon Fraser (17-10) fell one spot to No. 7.
Unbeaten and nationally 2nd-ranked UC San Diego (26-0) holds down the top spot again in this week's regional rankings, earning the inside track to host the West Regional Championships, Mar. 15-18.
Pacific West Conference regular-season champion Azusa Pacific (24-4) remains No. 4, followed by Cal Poly Pomona (23-4), Humboldt State (19-6), Simon Fraser and Dominican (21-5). Cal State San Marcos (17-9) and UAA non-conference opponent Hawaii Pacific (20-8) sit on the outside of the playoff bubble at Nos. 9 and 10.
The rankings take into account only Div. II games played through Mar. 3.
The top five 'at-large' teams – along with the winners of the GNAC, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pac West tournaments – will make the NCAAs, with the top seed generally earning the right to host. The NCAA field will be unveiled Sunday at 6 p.m. ADT at ncaa.com.
