Seawolves rally past Eagles in 5-set thriller

Pluharova ties career high with 9 total blocks in victory

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Pin hitters Eve Stephens and Vanessa Hayes combined for 30 kills Friday as Alaska Anchorage rallied for the final three points to win a 25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 21-25, 16-14 thriller over Biola in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase at The Den.

The Seawolves (4-3) got 16 kills, 10 digs and five blocks from Stephens, while Hayes had 14 kills and 13 digs, along with the assist on Ellen Floyd's match-point kill.

The Eagles (2-3) got a match-high 21 kills from outside hitter Sabrina Winslow, but the Pac West Conference squad was outhit .206 to .101 overall and could not capitalize on a chance at match point in the fifth set.

"We're still searching for more consistency in our play throughout the match but, most importantly, we showed a lot of poise at the end of this one," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team had defeated Biola 3-1 last week in Anchorage. "Any time it comes down to just a few points at the end like that, you need veterans who won't panic, and Vanessa stepped up especially big as our only senior. She made some plays during those final few rallies – including a couple huge digs – that allowed us to get this victory."

Despite dominating the first and third sets, UAA could not complete a fourth-set comeback after drawing within 20-19.

After splitting the first four points of the fifth, the Eagles pulled ahead for a 9-4 lead, capped by two kills from Becca Branch. UAA trailed 10-5 when a Biola service error opened the door on a Seawolf run, and Kayla McGlathery tied it 10-10 with her eighth kill.

Hayes blasted a kill just inside the line to knot the score 13-13, but the Eagles would earn a chance at match point on a kill by Madison Beebe. Floyd came up with a big play defensively on the next rally, though, with her dig leading to an attack error by Branch.

Two clutch digs by Floyd and libero Anjoilyn Vreeland set up Stephens for a kill to make it 15-14, and Floyd clinched the victory by sending a Hayes dig crosscourt for a quick kill.

Stephens earned her fourth double-double in seven matches this year, while Hayes's double-double was the third of her career. Junior middle blocker Vera Pluharova tied her career high with nine total blocks, including a pair of solos, and freshman outside hitter Hannah Pembroke added five kills.

Vreeland delivered three assists and a team-high 15 digs, and Floyd totaled 39 assists, three kills, four aces, 14 digs and a pair of block assists.

The Seawolves play their non-conference finale at the Showcase on Saturday when they face Point Loma at 10 a.m. ADT at The Den.
