Balanced Seawolves surge past Yellowjackets, 3-1

Pembroke sparkles with career-high 11 kills as UAA improves to 8-4

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore Eve Stephens collected 22 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got career-best offensive efforts from three other players to claim a 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-10 victory Saturday over Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

UAA (8-4, 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also used a season-high-tying 52 assists from sophomore setter Ellen Floyd, who quarterbacked the hosts to a .320 attack percentage. Four Seawolves recorded double-digit kills, with freshman outside hitter Hannah Pembroke notching a career-high 11, junior middle blocker Vera Pluharova tying her personal best with 10, and senior outside hitter Vanessa Hayes with 10.

MSUB (4-9, 2-2) was led by 13 kills from outside hitter Skylar Reed, but the Yellowjackets managed just three blocks and were hurt by 12 UAA aces as the Seawolves won for the 18th time in the teams' last 19 meetings.

"That fourth-set score was not indicative of how close this match was and what a quality opponent Billings is," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "I was pleased with our toughness in that third set, which really made the difference, and we just got on an incredible roll in the fourth. It's really encouraging to see us hit for such a high percentage and to get a lot of different people involved in the offense."

The Seawolves took the early advantage by fending off a late Yellowjacket rally in the opening set. UAA led 20-15 before Billings drew within 22-21 on a kill by Reed. Following a Seawolf timeout, Hayes and Stephens came up with kills to make it 24-22 and, after a kill by MSUB's Joelle Mahowald, UAA won on a Yellowjacket service error.

The visitors hit .357 to run away late with the second set, but the third frame would turn into a memorable battle. Billings erased an early 4-0 deficit to grab a 17-14 lead, inducing Green to call a timeout. UAA tied it 18-18 on an ace by Anjoilyn Vreeland, and the set was deadlocked again at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. Floyd fed Stephens for a kill to take the lead and then served her lone ace of the night to earn set point. Vreeland made a key dig on a long next rally, eventually setting up Stephens for the clinching kill.

The Seawolves led 7-5 in the fourth set before completely taking control. Hayes collected four of her career-high-tying five aces in the final frame, while UAA outhit Billings .609 to .043.

Sophomore libero Talia Leauanae led UAA with 10 digs, Vreeland had eight digs and two aces, and Floyd made nine digs to lead the back-row defense.

The Seawolves continue a three-match homestand Thursday at 7 p.m. when they face GNAC preseason co-favorite Central Washington (8-4, 3-1) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1562 or visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.

NOTES: UAA stayed one match behind GNAC co-leaders Western Washington (12-0, 4-0) and Alaska Fairbanks (7-5, 4-0) with the victory … sophomore middle blocker Akor Maywin saw the first action of her career in the third set and made a key solo block to spark UAA's winning surge … Pluharova's previous 10-kill effort came in a 5-set match, in the season opener against Regis … Pembroke had four more kills than her previous high and hit .391 on a career-high 23 attacks … Hayes' previous 5-ace effort also came in the 5-setter against Regis.
