Seawolves tame Mountain Lions for first win of 2019

UAA hits blazing .444 in rout of West Virginians

ANCHORAGE – Senior Vanessa Hayes and sophomore Eve Stephens blasted 11 kills apiece Friday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team used a historic offensive effort to cruise past Concord, 25-8, 25-12, 25-12, in the Seawolf Invitational for their first win of 2019.

The Seawolves (1-1) also got six kills apiece from middle blockers Vera Pluharova and Kayla McGlathery, plus 31 assists from setter Ellen Floyd, out-hitting the visitors from West Virigina .444 to .-082. UAA finished with 37 kills and nine errors on 63 attempts to record the third-highest attack percentage for a Seawolf club since 2000 and the program's best ever at the Alaska Airlines Center, which opened in 2014.

The Mountain Lions (0-2) were led by four kills from Camryn Huber and four digs from Lindsay Maddox in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

"Our passing and serving was much better than last night, and I'm proud of the way we took control of the match and never let Concord back in it," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team was coming off a tough 5-set loss to Regis in its Thursday opener. "We needed this win to get some momentum, and hopefully we can take it into our final two matches this weekend."

The Seawolves dominated throughout, jumping to leads of 7-0 in the first set, 11-5 in the second and 11-2 in the third.

Hayes – the team's only senior – came just .012 shy of her career high with a .588 attack percentage, while Stephens connected at a .500 clip. All four of the Seawolves' primary hitters hit .500 or better, with Pluharova at .714 and McGlathery at .625, with Concord managing just 14 digs for the match.

Freshman defensive specialist Maggie Schlueter delivered six of UAA's 14 aces, and junior libero Anjoilyn Vreeland had a match-high seven digs.

The Seawolves return to action tonight at 7:30 p.m. against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region foe Biola (Calif.).
