NAMPA, Idaho – Senior forward
Niko Bevens led a late comeback attempt with 14 points but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team Saturday in an 80-69 loss to Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.
The Seawolves (11-8, 4-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points from senior guard
Jack Macdonald as they were outshot 52.9 percent to 36.5 percent.
The Nighthawks (7-6, 4-4) were led by 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from guard Jayden Bezzant, plus 21 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting and seven rebounds from reserve guard Ezekiel Alley.
After battling through a first half that saw neither team lead by more than than six points, the Seawolves pulled ahead 43-41 on a Bevens three-pointer at the 17:55 mark.
The Nighthawks would pull ahead for good, however, on a traditional three-point play by Adalberto Diaz, and the hosts stretched their lead to 63-49 with a 17-4 run.
The Seawolves did not fade, scratching to within 66-64 on two Bevens free throws with 5:54 remaining, but NNU responded with the next seven points and maintained at least a three-possession lead for the final 4:26.
Bevens shot 4 of 7 from the field, including 3 of 6 on three-pointers, and was 3 of 3 at the charity stripe. Macdonald made 5 of 10 shots, while Pantovic scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Tyler Brimhall finished with eight points and two blocks, and senior guard
Tyrus Hosley added eight points for UAA.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to host in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks. Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
