#5 Seawolves shoot past Clan in Canada, 87-66

BURNABY, British Columbia – Junior center Tennae Voliva had 19 points on near-perfect shooting and 10 rebounds Saturday and senior guard Safiyyah Yasin poured in 18 points to lead 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to an 87-66 women's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (19-2, 9-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points and five rebounds from sophomore guard Jahnna Hajdukovich as they responded to their first GNAC loss in over a year by shooting season-highs of 55 percent from the field and 93 percent at the free-throw line.

The Clan (12-8, 7-3) were led by 16 points, six rebounds and three steals from forward Claudia Hart, but the hosts were outrebounded 39-30 and shot just 3 of 21 from long range.

"That was a great response to a tough loss," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team's 27-game GNAC win streak was snapped with a 71-64 loss Thursday at Western Washington. "Except for our lull late in the first half, I thought every one of our players executed their assignments and played their respective roles extremely well."

After trailing the entire game at WWU, the Seawolves flipped the script against the Clan, jumping to a 15-4 advantage. Hajdukovich nailed a three-pointer and Yasin made two free throws to go up 34-15 with seven minutes left in the half, but SFU responded with a run of its own, cutting it to a 40-33 game at halftime.

UAA's lead remained steady at 54-47 with 3:30 left in the third quarter, before Voliva took over. The former East Anchorage High School star converted a traditional three-point play to stretch the lead to double digits for good, then nailed two free throws during a 14-2 run to end the quarter, which expired when she swished a jumper in the lane for a 68-49 lead.

Voliva shot 7 of 8 from the field and 5 of 5 at the charity stripe, recording her fifth double-double.

Yasin – who was held to four points in Thursday's setback – shot 7 of 11 from the field and 4 of 4 on free throws, along with four rebounds, four assists and just one turnover in 26 minutes. Senior point guard Yazmeen Goo had five points, four assists, no turnovers and a block, while junior wing Lauren Johnson scored all seven of her points in the third quarter and grabbed three steals to propel the clinching surge.

Freshman guard Rachel Ingram added nine points on 3-of-7 long range shooting, while committing no turnovers in 17 minutes.

With all 11 teams at the midpoint of the GNAC schedule, the Seawolves now lead Northwest Nazarene by one game and SFU by two games, with 10 contests left for everyone.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center next week to face Saint Martin's on Thursday, Jan. 30, and Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 1, in 5:15 p.m. tips. Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
