UAA blasts St. Martin's 96-57 for record-setting win

LACEY, Wash. – Senior forward Niko Bevens scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team rolled to a record-breaking 96-57 victory over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (10-5, 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 18 points from senior guard Tyrus Hosley, 14 points from sophomore guard Tobin Karlberg and a 13-point, 11-rebound effort from junior center Oggie Pantovic as they posted their largest win in a GNAC road game since the conference was founded in 2001.

The Saints (4-9, 2-2) were led by 23 points from guard CJ Jennings, but the rest his teammates shot just 10 of 29 from the floor, while the getting doubled up on the boards, 42-21.

"Any road win is a good one, but this is especially satisfying because of how well we played from start to finish," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose program also earned its second-largest margin in any GNAC game. "We ran our offense well, made great decisions and maintained our defensive intensity throughout the game, without worrying about the scoreboard. Luckily we still have a lot of room to improve as we've just reached the midpoint of the regular season."

Trying to snap a four-game losing skid against the Saints, the Seawolves fell behind 9-3 in the opening minutes before righting the ship. Bevens – who shot 7 of 12 from long range – snapped an 11-11 tie to give UAA the lead for good, and Hosley and Karlberg combined for three straight treys to stretch the advantage to 33-22 at the 7:02 mark.

The Saints hung within striking distance at 43-30 with a minute remaining in the first half, before the Seawolves took complete control. After Hosley finished the half with a traditional three-point play, UAA started the second half with a 17-5 surge, going ahead 67-37 on a Bevens three-pointer with 14:53 remaining.

UAA shot 51.5 percent from the field and equaled their season high for three-pointers made, draining 18 of 37 from deep. Karlberg scored at least 13 points for the sixth straight game as the sophomore from Anchorage's Grace Christian High School shot 4 of 5 overall, 3 of 4 from deep and 3 of 3 at the foul stripe.

Hosley had his second-highest scoring total as a Seawolf on 7-of-11 shooting, while Pantovic shot 6 of 8 from the field and added two blocks. Pantovic's double-double was his second in a row and third this season.

Junior guard DeAndre Osuigwe added five points, five assists and a UAA season-high five steals, and Amari Hale collected five points, four rebounds and four assists.

UAA's previous largest GNAC road victory came by a 66-42 score against Saint Martin's in January 2008, while the Seawolves set the overall mark with a 90-46 home win over Montana State Billings the same season – one that saw the Seawolves earn the GNAC title and an NCAA Semifinals berth.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for games against Western Washington on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and Saint Martin's on Saturday, Jan. 11 (5:15 p.m.). Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
