LACEY, Wash. – Senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin scored 18 points and senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo delivered 13 points and five assists Saturday to help 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage overcome a Saint Martin's upset bid for a 73-63 women's basketball victory at Marcus Pavilion.
The Seawolves (14-1, 4-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a season-high-tying 12 points from junior forward
Sala Langi to record their 23rd consecutive GNAC regular-season victory and 11th in a row over the Saints.
The Saints (6-5, 1-3) got a game-high 27 points from reigning GNAC Freshman of the Year Claire Dingus, plus 17 points and nine rebounds from freshman Bria Thames.
"That was a terrific test for our ladies tonight against a team that is going to get its share of GNAC victories this season," said UAA coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team survived allowing 30 free throw attempts by the Saints. "They pushed us to the limit but we showed resilience by answering each time they made a run. Then we had shot-makers – like Rachel (Ingram) – step up and take advantage of some good looks at clutch moments."
Coming off a 96-62 blowout of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday and trying to avenge a 107-47 loss to UAA last year on the same court, Saint Martin's battled hard throughout the contest, keeping the game within 12 points the entire way.
The hosts took a brief 14-13 lead at the outset of the second quarter before UAA took the lead for good on four straight points from Yasin and a layup by Langi.
Langi started the second half scoring with two free throws for UAA's first double-digit lead at 39-29, but the Saints rallied back twice within a point, making it 48-47 on a three-pointer by Mallory Vivola with 2:36 left in the third quarter.
Following a layup by Goo, Ingram took a pass from Yasin and drilled the first of her three three-pointers over the next four minutes. The freshman's final trey made it 61-49 with 8:39 left, and junior point guard
Stephanie Jackson scored on a putback to keep the advantage 65-53 with 5:51 on the clock.
Dingus sliced it to a 67-61 score on a traditional three-point play with 2:19 remaining, but the Saints could get no closer.
Yasin scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half and finished with six rebounds, two assists, no turnovers and two steals, while Goo shot 4 of 5. Langi matched her season high for the third time by shooting 4 of 8, along with a steal and no turnovers.
Ingram had nine points (3-5 3FG),
Tennae Voliva notched six points, eight rebounds, two blocks and three steals, and the Seawolves got solid efforts off the bench from guards
Stephanie Jackson (6 pts, 3-5 FG, 2 assists) and
Lauren Johnson (4 pts, 2-2 FG, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, no turnovers).
