ANCHORAGE – Junior center
Oggie Pantovic had 24 points and 15 rebounds and senior guard
Tyrus Hosley added 18 points, including the game-winning jumper in overtime, to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 70-68 men's basketball victory over Central Washington on Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-11, 9-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points and six rebounds from senior forward
Niko Bevens as they forged a split of the regular-season series and pulled one game ahead of the visitors in a multi-team battle to qualify for the upcoming GNAC Tournament.
The Wildcats (15-9, 8-8) were led by 17 points and seven rebounds from reserve guard Gamaun Boykin but were outrebounded 40-26 as their five-game winning streak was halted.
"We had some mental lapses and committed some turnovers that let them take back the momentum in the second half, but our guys persevered and got some big stops and hit some big shots down the stretch," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team has played three straight overtime games for the first time in 43 years of program history. "Oggie and Tyrus did a terrific job of carrying us on the offensive end, and defensively
Tobin Karlberg did a great job against their leading scorer (Jeryn Lucas), really shutting him down in the last 10 minutes and overtime."
Coming off a 90-89 overtime win against Northwest Nazarene two nights early, the Seawolves seized momentum with the game's first eight points and built a 19-3 lead after six minutes.
UAA led 36-26 at halftime and pushed it to 42-31 on two Pantovic free throws, but the Wildcats charged back with their biggest run of the game and grabbed their first advantage at 45-44 on Marqus Gilson's layup at the 11:40 mark.
Lucas scored back-to-back baskets to give the Wildcats a 54-46 lead with 7:13 remaining, but that would be his final points of the game as he finished with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting, without attempting a shot in the extra period.
Karlberg delivered a traditional three-point play during an 8-0 Seawolf run to tie it, only to see the Wildcats grab a 61-56 lead with 1:17 on the clock. Pantovic made two free throws and Lucas threw the ball away on Central's next possession, however, setting up Hosley for a tying three-pointer with six seconds left. Boykin missed a running jumper on the other end as time expired in regulation.
Neither team led by more than two points in overtime, with the Seawolves erasing a trio of Wildcat advantages over the first three minutes. Tied 66-66, Pantovic made two free throws with one minute left, and Central's Micah Pollard answered with a layup with 32 seconds remaining.
Following a timeout, Hosley took the ball and drove to his right as the shot clock wound down, spinning away from the defense and swishing a 15-foot fadeaway jumper over the outstretched hand of Central forward Kevin Baker.
Central had one final chance with 1.2 seconds left, but Marcus Pollard threw the inbounds pass the length of the court and out of bounds.
Pantovic – a 6-8 center from Kovin, Serbia – shot 8 of 15 from the floor and 8 of 10 at the free throw line to earn his eighth double-double and fourth straight game with at least 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Hosley finished 6 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 6 from long range, and added two assists in a career-high 39 minutes.
Karlberg overcome a tough shooting night to deliver eight rebounds and three assists, while senior forward
Tyler Brimhall had seven points (3-5 FG), three rebounds and a key steal with 1:37 left in overtime.
Senior
Jack Macdonald finished with six points and a team-high four assists for UAA, which is now tied for fifth place with their next opponent, Alaska Fairbanks, with four games remaining. The top six teams in the final standings qualify for the GNAC Tournament, set for Mar. 5-7 in Seattle.
