Seniors propel 87-73 win over Billings in home finale

ANCHORAGE – Guards Tyrus Hosley and Tobin Karlberg scored 20 points apiece to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team close its home season in style Saturday with an 87-73 victory over Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (18-11, 11-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 19 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting from senior forward Niko Bevens as they tied a season high with 19 treys and clinched a winning league record, along with a possible bid to the upcoming GNAC Tournament.

The Yellowjackets (10-16, 5-13) were led by 15 points and 10 assists from Tyler Green, but the visitors were outrebounded 32-22 and outshot .559 (19 of 34) to .400 (8 of 20) from three-point range.

"I was proud of our effort from start to finish today, and I couldn't think of a better way to send out our four seniors in their final home game," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team won its season-high fourth game in a row. "Our shooters did an amazing job of taking advantage of their open looks, and we were able to start getting Oggie (Pantovic) some paint touches in the second half that really kept Billings at bay when it seemed like they couldn't miss a shot. We're excited to take this momentum into a couple of big road games to end the regular season this week."

After battling to a last-second 81-80 victory over the Yellowjackets one month ago, the Seawolves used a 15-0 run midway through the first half to take control early in the rematch. Senior forward Tyler Brimhall swished consecutive treys to make it 21-12, and Hosley made one of his five first-half three-pointers for a 35-18 lead and force an MSUB timeout.

The Yellowjackets made 10 of their first 14 shots to begin the second half, but could get never cut their deficit to single digits.

Bevens – who entered at No. 6 on UAA's career three-pointers list (183) – made his first five attempts after the break, while Karlberg shot 3 of 4 from long range in both halves, along with four assists and five rebounds.

Pantovic – a junior center from Kovin, Serbia – had 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds as the scored double figures for the 17th consecutive time. Brimhall had nine points (3-8 3FG) and five rebounds in his final home game.

Still awaiting the results of tonight's other games to learn it they have officially qualified for the six-team GNAC Tournament (Mar. 5-7 in Seattle), the Seawolves finish the regular season with a pair of road games next week, facing Western Oregon on Thursday (6:30 pm AST) and Concordia-Portland on Saturday, Feb. 29 (1 pm AST).
